GENERAL INFORMATION

Antalya

In 150 BC Attalos II, king of Pergamom, founded the city of Attalia (present day Antalya) to base his powerful naval fleet, and the city grew and prospered in the Ancient Roman and Byzantine periods.The city, along with the whole region, was conquered by the Seljuk Turks in the early 13th century and then submitted to the Ottoman Empire.The city was briefly occupied by the Italians from the end of the First WorldWar until the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

Situated on a steep cliff over the Mediterranean, Antalya is a picturesque city surrounded by mountains. Developments in tourism, starting in the 1970s, have transformed the city into an international resort. With its airport and central location, Antalya is "the capital of Turkish tourism", a gateway for the Turkish riviera and many historical sites. Furthermore, with its palmlined boulevards, its prize-winning marina, the unspoilt historical neighbourhood of Kaleiçi, and the modern developments along the coast, the city of Antalya is a major attraction in its own right.

Antalya has plenty of accomodation, a very hot climate and many places to visit both in and around the city, including traces of Pamphylian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures.

Venue

The International College of Surgeons European Federation Turkey Section Meeting will be held at the Atlantis Hotel on October 18-19, 2007.

Arrivals

Transfers from the Antalya Airport to the congress hotel will be provided by Valor Congress Organizations.

For congress delegates and accompanying guests who travel in their own vehicles or by other means, the address for the meeting is as follows:

Registration Desk

The Registration Desk will be located at Atlantis Hotel. The hours for registration are 1300 to 1900 hours on October 17, 2007, and 0800 to 1800 hours on the following days. Pre-registered participants who go directly to the Hotel will receive a congress badge. Complete congress kits will be available only at the Registration Desk, and can be picked up there upon arrival.

Language

The official language of the congress is English. Simultaneous translation will not be provided.

Time Zone

Local time in Turkey is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Weather

It is usually warm in October (15-17ºC at night, 25-27ºC in the day). Rain is rare at this time of the year, but there are occasional showers so you may want to bring an umbrella just in case.

Passport and Visa

A valid passport is required, and visitors from some countries may need a visa in order to enter Turkey. Please obtain the relevant information from the Turkish Consulate in your country.

Local Currency

The local currency in Turkey is the New Turkish Lira (YTL).
